The Invisible AI Career Mentor: How I Built a CV Analyzer That Actually Gives USEFUL Advice!
Free Mini-App Inside!
Hey digital adventurers! You know what keeps me up at night besides those late-night coding sessions I'm always talking about? The absolute CHAOS that is modern career development! After spending months diving deep into all things AI (remember when I wrote about finding the AI sweet spot?), I've been obsessing over this question:
Why are we using AI for literally everything EXCEPT the thing that could actually help us most - personalized, continuous career guidance?
Think about it - we're getting AI to write our emails, generate our social media posts, and even code alongside us, but when it comes to figuring out our ACTUAL CAREERS, we're still relying on generic advice articles, outdated frameworks, and that one friend who "knows someone in the industry."
So what did I do? What I ALWAYS do when I see a problem that bugs me enough - I built something to solve it! And that something is now live at careerbuilder.jock.pl!
What the Heck Is This Thing Anyway?
In the simplest terms, I've created an AI-powered CV analyzer that actually gives USEFUL, SPECIFIC career advice. Not just "you should network more" or "consider upskilling" - but concrete, actionable guidance based on YOUR unique professional history.
Upload your CV or paste in your professional experience, and the system will:
Analyze your career trajectory and identify patterns
Recommend logical next career moves based on your experience
Provide salary expectations aligned with your skill level and market
Suggest specific skills to develop for your target roles
Highlight your unique professional strengths and potential blind spots
But here's the thing - this isn't just another "AI resume optimizer" (we have PLENTY of those already). This is about creating what I'm calling an "Invisible AI Mentor" - a system that works in the background to provide you with ongoing career intelligence rather than one-off advice.
Why I Built This (Beyond My Usual 2 AM Inspiration)
Remember when I wrote about tracking what actually works with AI? I've been applying that same framework to understand how AI can genuinely transform career development beyond the obvious use cases.
The problem with traditional career guidance is three-fold:
It's often too generic to be useful for YOUR specific situation
It happens too infrequently (annual reviews anyone?)
It lacks pattern recognition across your entire professional history
When I was building my Dynamic Claude Chat system, I realized the same principles could create a career guidance system that evolves with you continuously rather than giving static advice.
The current version at careerbuilder.jock.pl is just the beginning - think of it as the "quick analysis" feature of what will eventually become a much more comprehensive career intelligence system!
How I Built It (The Technical Bits)
Since I know some of you are fellow tech enthusiasts (and potential technical co-founders yourselves!), here's a peek behind the curtain.
The system uses a combination of:
Natural language processing to extract structured data from unstructured CV text
Pattern matching against millions of career trajectories to identify potential paths
Market data integration for realistic salary expectations
A specialized LLM fine-tuned specifically for career advice
But the REAL magic happens in the prompt engineering and the structured framework I've created for analyzing career data. Just like I discovered when building AI knowledge systems, the key is creating a systematic approach to processing information rather than just throwing raw data at an AI.
This wasn't a massive undertaking either - the entire MVP cost me less than $50 to build and deploy (not counting my time, of course)! It's yet another example of what I'm always saying about building minimalist solutions that solve real problems.
The Evolution: From CV Analysis to Continuous Career Mentorship
The current tool is just the first step in what I envision as a much more comprehensive system. Here's where I see this evolving:
Phase 1: CV Analysis (Current)
Quick insights from your existing professional experience.
Phase 2: Career Journaling Integration
Imagine maintaining a structured record of your achievements, challenges, feedback received, and skills developed. This creates much richer data for analysis than a standard CV.
Phase 3: Quarterly Career Review System
Systematic review sessions that blend AI-generated insights with your own reflection and goal-setting.
Phase 4: Integration with Your Workflow
Connecting with your actual work tools to gather real-time data on your skills in action.
Think about how powerful this could be! Instead of trying to remember all your accomplishments during annual review season, you'd have an AI mentor continuously tracking your professional growth and offering timely, relevant guidance.
Real-World Applications (Beyond Just Finding Your Next Job)
I've been testing early versions of this system with a small group of professionals across different fields, and the use cases go WAY beyond just job hunting:
Skill Gap Identification: Discovering which specific capabilities would most enhance your market value
Strategic Career Pivoting: Getting data-backed insights on realistic transition paths to new industries
Negotiation Support: Arming yourself with concrete evidence of your value when seeking promotions
Personal Branding: Identifying your unique professional strengths to emphasize in profiles and interviews
Learning Prioritization: Focusing your limited learning time on the highest-ROI skills for your career path
This reminds me of what I discovered when exploring automation potential - the best AI applications aren't about replacing human judgment but enhancing it with pattern recognition at a scale we can't achieve on our own.
What Makes This Different from Commercial AI Career Tools
There are plenty of AI resume builders and job matching tools out there already, but most suffer from serious limitations:
They offer generic advice based on broad career categories
They lack deep understanding of your specific work context and history
They operate as black boxes, providing recommendations without transparent reasoning
They function as isolated tools rather than integrated systems that evolve with you
The approach I'm taking is fundamentally different - it's about creating a truly personalized AI mentor system that functions more like a dedicated advisor than an automated tool.
In many ways, it's similar to the evolution I've seen across AI applications. Just like I wrote about when to use AI and when to run away, the key is finding that sweet spot where AI enhances your natural capabilities rather than trying to replace your judgment entirely.
Try It Yourself and Help Make It Better!
The current version at careerbuilder.jock.pl is very much an MVP - it works, it provides value, but it's just the beginning of what I envision for this tool.
I'd LOVE for you to try it out and let me know what you think. Here's what would be most helpful:
Upload your actual CV or paste in your professional experience
See what insights and recommendations you get
Tell me what's useful and what's missing
Share any ideas you have for how this could evolve
The beauty of building these kinds of tools is that they get better with feedback and data. Just like when I showed you that Excel helper tool, I'm sharing this early so we can improve it together!
What's Next for This Project?
I'm already working on several enhancements:
A more sophisticated pattern matching algorithm for career path identification
Integration with real-time job market data for more accurate recommendations
The ability to compare your profile against specific job descriptions
A structured career journaling interface for ongoing professional documentation
The ultimate vision is to create what researchers call "invisible technology" - AI that works effectively in the background while keeping you in control of important decisions. I want this system to feel less like a tool you have to manage and more like a trusted advisor who's always by your side, helping you navigate your professional journey.
I'm also exploring how this could eventually tie into the AI knowledge system I've been developing. Imagine if your career mentor had access to all your professional knowledge and could help you leverage it more effectively!
Want to Build Your Own AI Career Mentor?
If you're inspired to create your own personalized career guidance system, here are some starting points:
Establish a structured career journal - Document achievements, challenges, feedback, and skills in a format optimized for AI analysis
Create specialized prompts - Develop prompts that help AI tools extract meaningful insights from your career data
Implement a quarterly review ritual - Systematize the use of your AI career mentor with regular review sessions
Integrate with your existing tools - Make your system sustainable by connecting it with tools you already use
Or, you know, just use the one I'm building and save yourself the trouble! That works too.
Final Thoughts: The Future of AI in Career Development
I truly believe we're just scratching the surface of how AI can transform career development. While most applications focus on the job search process itself, I think the bigger opportunity is in ongoing career intelligence - helping professionals make better decisions continuously throughout their careers.
As I've been writing about extensively in my posts on AI implementation and digital transformation, the most powerful AI applications aren't the flashiest ones - they're the ones that solve genuine problems and integrate seamlessly into our existing workflows.
That's exactly what I'm aiming for with this project. Not a revolutionary new platform that requires you to change how you work, but an invisible mentor that enhances your career development with minimal friction.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on this approach and any ideas you have for how this tool could evolve. Head over to careerbuilder.jock.pl, give it a try, and drop a comment below with your feedback!

This is so cool, just tested it and it looks really promising!
And tbh, I can’t believe it. At the beginning of this year, I also started working on some ideas around helping people find and land their next career move. We started with the exploratory phase and discovering what’s next. We licensed a proper personality test (the famous Holland test) and then used an algorithm to match users with potential careers based on their personalities.
However, after testing it with over 200 people, it seemed like the career matching algorithm didn’t really work properly, as it didn’t always nail what people had in mind for their next move.
So the obvious next step would’ve been to just add a layer, kind of like what you’ve built, analyzing the user’s past career, skills, and recommending paths more aligned with their real trajectory, not just their personality.
We also built this: https://list.careermanager.ai/ with Cursor, but it’s far from finished, where we added over 1,000 occupations, trying to help people filter through options more easily.
In the meantime, we dropped the project. Maybe we could have a chat and exchange learnings!
Would be happy to contribute to some of the things you’re building around “what’s next”, and I can also share what we used for the jobs database.
